About Bonaire Notaris

Our office’s archives contain the very first deed to Bonaire, dated March 20, 1852. The deeds of that era used parchment and were written in an ornate handwriting. The notarial archives contain a wealth of information about Bonaire’s past, for example, a 1912 deed describing the public sale of the stranded ship Mairi Bhan. The Mairi Bhan had run aground at the entrance to Lake Goto in late 1912 when her anchor failed to hold during a storm. It took two weeks before she actually sank. During those two weeks, the ship was sold to the highest bidder. The deed contains a detailed list of items that were present on the ship. The Mairi Bhan, better known today as the Windjammer, lies at a depth of 60 meters from the BOPEC site and is now a popular dive site among technically proficient divers.
